College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 21, 2008)

MIAMI, FLA. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami, Fla. (33-4) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Hurricanes beat Florida St. two of three games over the past weekend and rank first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 17-2 record. Miami is averaging 9.5 runs per game and hitting .343 with 72 stolen bases in 37 games. The pitching staff has a 4.10 ERA with 332 strikeouts and 119 walks

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red hot lately. San Diego has won 12 in a row, Rice 11 straight, Arizona 10 in a row, North Carolina and Coastal Carolina 9 consecutive while Michigan has won 14 of its last 15, North Carolina St. 13 of its last 16 and Notre Dame 12 of 13. New to the top 30 this week is Arizona, Oregon St. (knocked off Arizona St. two of three over the past weekend), and N.C. Wilmington. Teams which fell out of the poll this week include Texas (0-4 last week), East Carolina (1-4) and Tennessee (1-3).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B Nate Recknagel, Michigan: Recknagel hit 5 home runs over 6 games last week with 11 RBIs for the Wolverines. He leads the team in hitting (.392), home runs (16), RBI (47) and runs (37).

RHP Scott Gorgen, U.C. Irvine: Gorgen struck out a career-high 14 batters in seven innings during the Anteaters’ 7-2 win over U.C. Riverside. He fanned nine batters over the first four innings. Gorgen gave up just three hits and walked two in the outing.
