College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 14, 2008)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. (31-3) has been ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Seminoles, No. 1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 17-1 record, have won nine straight games and 15 of their last 16. Florida St. is hitting .352 and averaging 9.82 runs per game.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red hot lately. Miami, Fla. has won 17 of its last 18 games, Texas A&M 13 in a row, Mississippi 9 of its last 10, San Diego and Notre Dame 8 straight and Rice 7 consecutive. Teams which fell out of the poll this week include Long Beach St., St. John's, Florida, N.C. Charlotte, N.C. Wilmington and Southern Mississippi. New to the poll this week is Oklahoma St., Michigan, Coastal Carolina, North Carolina St., Notre Dame and Tennessee.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Stephen Strasburg, San Diego St.: Strasburg struck out 23 batters and tossed a 1-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Utah. The 23 strikeouts were a new San Diego St. and Mountain West Conference record. It also ties for the third most ever in an NCAA Division I game and the most in a contest since 1981. He struck out the side in the first inning and fifth through the eighth. Sixteen of the final 17 outs were via strikeouts. The only hit he allowed was a chopper up the middle for a single in the fifth inning.

1B Trent Lockwood, Texas-San Antonio: Lockwood belted 4 home runs and 13 RBIs over a 3-game series against Northwestern St. He registered a 1.462 slugging percentage on the strength of 19 total bases as he went 7-for-13 at the plate.

1B Mike Jaworski, Northwestern St.: Jaworski had a career week for the Demons as he blasted 5 home runs in 5 games and knocked in 10 runs. He set a new school record with 3 home runs against Texas-San Antonio in one game with a career-high 5 RBIs. Over 5 contests, he was 10-for-16 at the plate with a 1.625 slugging percentage and walked 5 times.
