College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 31, 2008)

ARIZONA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. (25-1) has been ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils, winners of six straight, have outscored opponents 266-93 through 26 games and averaged 10.2 runs per game with a team batting average of .343. The pitching staff has fanned 252 batters (9.7 strikeouts per game) while limiting opponents to 66 walks. ASU has only allowed 11 stolen bases in 18 attempts over 26 games.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been extremely hot. N.C. Wilmington (21-4) has the longest winning streak in the nation with 20 in a row followed by Wichita St. (17 straight). Miami, Fla. has captured 8 straight wins in rolling to a 21-2 overall record while Michigan has won six straight and 10 of its last 11. Teams which fell out of the poll this week include Arizona (lost 8 of last 10), Baylor (3-2 last week), Mississippi (1-3), San Diego (3-3) and Washington St. (2-2). New to the poll this week is N.C. Wilmington, Southern Mississippi (won 2 of 3 at Rice), East Carolina (won 2 of 3 against Central Florida), Michigan, and Georgia (15-10 overall, 6-3 in Southeastern Conference, with victories in two of three games at Mississippi St.).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

LHP Levi Curry, Mount Vernon Nazarene: Curry fired a perfect game during a 7-0 win over Cedarville in a 7-inning contest. He retired all 21 batters in order to notch the second perfect game and 16th no-hitter in school history. The only previous perfect game took place during the 1999 season. Curry needed only 90 pitches as he matched his career high with 10 strikeouts.

LHP Nick Kirk, Northern Iowa: Kirk struck out 15 batters on the way to pitching the first no-hitter in 13 years for the Panthers during a 3-0 win over Evansville. He retired 10 straight batters to start the game, including a string of 8 on strikeouts.

RHP Brandon McClurg, Lipscomb: McClurg fired a 4-0 no-hitter against Kennesaw St. He only walked one batter and struck out 10 during the 113-pitch complete game effort.

1B Trent Lockwood, Texas-San Antonio: Lockwood belted 4 homers with 8 runs scored and 13 RBIs over 5 games as he went 9-for-19 at the plate. His most memorable game took place with a 4-for-5, 5-run, 3-homer, 9 RBI performance against Prairie View A&M.

3B James Darnell, South Carolina: For the second straight week, Darnell tied a school single-game record for home runs in a game as he belted 3 against Kentucky. A week earlier, he cracked a trio against College of Charleston. It marked the first time ever in South Carolina history one player has done this twice. On the season, Darnell has hit 8 home runs with 34 RBIs.
