PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 24, 2008)

ARIZONA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. (22-1-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils have outscored opponents 232-81 through 23 games and average 10.1 runs per game with a team batting average of .336. The pitching staff has fanned 227 batters (9.8 strikeouts per game) while limiting opponents to 53 walks. ASU has only allowed 9 stolen bases in 16 attempts over 23 games.

Arizona St. saw its 19-game winning streak come to an end against Northern Colorado in a 6-3 loss. It was the longest winning streak to begin a season for the Sun Devils since 1961.

No. 2 Florida St. (19-2) is 9-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the best league start since going 13-0 in 1999.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot. Missouri has won 13 straight, Wichita St. 11 in a row and N.C. Charlotte and Long Beach St. 7 consecutive. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in UCLA (0-3 last week), East Carolina (2-2) and Tennessee (2-3). New teams in the poll this week include N.C. Charlotte (17-2 overall, 7-game winning streak), St. John's (16-4) and San Diego (16-7).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
