College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 17, 2008)

ARIZONA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. (17-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils have outscored opponents 181-55 through 17 games and average 10.6 runs per game with a team batting average of .326. The pitching staff that has a 2.29 team ERA with 165 strikeouts and only 40 walks. ASU has only allowed four stolen bases in nine attempts over 17 games.

Poll Notes: Several teams have strung together substantial winning streaks, including Kentucky (18), Arizona St. (17), Nebraska (13), East Carolina (12), Missouri (8), Central Florida (8) and Tennessee (8). Five teams fell out of the poll this week in Arkansas (1-4 last week), Oklahoma (3-3), Clemson (3-2), Oklahoma St. (2-2) and Pepperdine (3-2). New teams in the poll include Nebraska (14-2 overall, 13-game winning streak), Washington St. (13-5, beat Oklahoma three of four in Norman, Okla. over the past weekend), East Carolina (13-4, 12 wins in a row), Florida (14-3, 3-0 Southeastern Conference), and Tennessee (12-4, 3-0 SEC, eight wins in a row, including 3 straight against Louisiana St.).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DH Billy Barber, Richmond: Barber cracked 6 home runs over 5 games as he went 12-for-24 at the plate. He also knocked in 16 runs, scored 9 times and added 3 doubles. His slugging percentage was 1.375.

CF Nate Lape, Marshall: In six games, Lape hit 5 home runs, 3 doubles and registered 11 RBIs. He also scored 12 runs, stole a pair of bases. Lape is the team leader in almost every offensive category.

OF Chris Shehan, Georgia Southern: Shehan delivered 5 home runs, 3 doubles and knocked in 10 runs last week over 5 games. He also scored 12 runs and was a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases.

1B Ike Davis, Arizona St.: Davis delivered 4 home runs and recorded 8 RBIs over 5 games last week as he was 9-for-17 at the plate. He also added 3 doubles and scored 7 runs.

RHP Aaron Crow, Missouri: Crow struck out a career-high 15 batters during a 6-0 win over Toledo. Only two batters advanced beyond first base as he allowed seven hits but no walks. At one point in the game, he fanned 11 of 15 batters he faced.

RHP Mark McCain, Pacific: McCain fanned 15 batters during a 3-1 win over Minnesota. He posted nine strikeouts through the top of the fifth inning. In nine innings of work, he gave up 4 hits and one walk.

RHP Ricky Bowen, Mississippi St.: Bowen came within an infield error of registering a complete game no-hit shutout during a 4-0 win against the University of Mississippi. He struck out a career-high 11 batters and retired the first 14 batters he faced. He only gave up one walk and two singles.

RHP Scott Gorgen, U.C. Irvine: Gorgen fired a 1-hitter during a 9-0 win over Hawaii. He struck out 9 batters in eight innings and retired the first 12 batters he faced. The Rainbows' only hit was in the seventh inning as he faced only four above the minimum.
