College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 10, 2008)

ARIZONA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. (12-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Sun Devils have outscored opponents 138-35 through 12 games and average 11.5 runs per game. The pitching staff that has a 2.00 team ERA with 113 strikeouts and only 30 walks. ASU has only allowed two stolen bases to opponents.

No. 2 Arizona (10-1) has been just as impressive with 10 consecutive wins. In the Wildcats' three straight wins at the Whataburger College Classic over the past weekend in Corpus Christi, Tex., the pitching staff recorded three straight shutouts and pushed across 37 runs on 38 hits in wins over South Alabama (18-0), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-0) and Notre Dame (15-0).

Poll Notes: A number of teams are on a roll. Arizona St. and Florida St. have each won 12 in a row to start the 2008 season. Others with impressive win streaks are Kentucky (11-0), Arizona (10 in a row), Oklahoma (9 straight), and Coastal Carolina (8 consecutive). New teams in the top 30 this week include Cal. St. Fullerton which won five straight last week (2 over UCLA and 3 over Southern Mississippi), Oklahoma (12-2), and Coastal Carolina (12-1). A trio of teams fell out of the poll this week in Oregon St. (2-2 last week), Oral Roberts (1-2) and Michigan (1-2). In a key top 30 series during the past week, Stanford knocked off Texas two of three in Austin.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B Aaron Murphree, Arkansas: Murphree produced one of the most amazing weeks in Arkansas history as he belted 8 home runs over six games. He was 11-for-24 at the plate with 15 RBIs and 13 runs scored while posting a 1.667 slugging percentage. He has now homered in a school-record six straight games and has 12 round trippers on the season which is halfway to Arkansas' single-season home run record of 24.

RHP Preston Guilmet, Arizona: Guilmet registered a season-high 12 strikeouts over eight innings with no walks in an 18-0 win over South Alabama. He fanned five in the first three innings, retiring six straight on strikes in the fourth and fifth innings and did not give up a hit over his final 5 1/3 innings.

RHP Curt Dixon, Univ. of The Ozarks: Dixon struck out 14 batters against East Texas Baptist. He forced a groundout to open the game and then fanned 11 straight. During the first five innings, he allowed only one hit and one walk. His 14 strikeouts tied a conference record.
