College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 25, 2008) ARIZONA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona St. (3-0) has been ranked No. 1 in the first 2008 regular-season NCAA Division I baseball poll compiled by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The Sun Devils, ranked third in the pre-season Collegiate Baseball poll, blanked Miami (Ohio), 7-0 and then beat Vanderbilt, 18-6 and 2-time defending national champion Oregon St., 11-0. ASU All-American Brett Wallace belted 3 homers and knocked in 9 runs as he went 5-for-12 over the three games. In the 18-6 win over Vanderbilt, he cracked a grand slam and a 3-run homer as he collected 7 RBIs. The following game against Oregon St., he led off the game with a solo blast, his third straight at-bat with a homer. Arizona, ranked No. 1 in the pre-season, slipped to second after winning two of three at Georgia. Poll Notes: One key series during the first weekend of NCAA Division I baseball took place with Rice playing at Long Beach St. The first game featured a 1-0, 10-inning win by the 49ers which was followed by a 3-2 win by Long Beach St. Rice won the final game, 3-1. Seventeen of the top 30 teams this week had perfect records. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Fresno St. (2-2, split four games with U.C. Davis), Mississippi St. (1-2, lost two of three at North Florida) and Louisiana St. (2-1, won two of three against Indiana). Three new teams in the poll this week include Oklahoma St. (4-0, won four straight against Gonzaga), San Diego St. (2-1, won two of three against San Diego), and Arkansas (3-0, won three straight against Wright St.). The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
