The Owls, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season poll last January, won three straight to capture the Houston Regional and have been victorious in 25 of their last 26 games. But disaster struck five of the top eight national seeds in Vanderbilt (previously ranked No. 1 for nine straight weeks), Florida St., San Diego, Texas, and Arkansas. If that wasn't enough, Virginia, ranked fifth in the last Collegiate Baseball poll, was upset by defending national champion Oregon St. Poll Notes: The biggest upset of the NCAA Division I tournament took place when Michigan knocked off Vanderbilt as the Wolverines beat the Commodores twice to advance. In other upsets, Cal. St. Fullerton rolled through the San Diego Regional with three straight wins to knock out highly regarded San Diego. U.C. Irvine bumped out Texas from the field after capturing the Round Rock, Tex. Regional. Louisville stunned Missouri to win the Columbia, Mo. Regional. Oklahoma St. upset Arkansas to win the Fayetteville Regional. And Mississippi St. knocked off highly regarded Florida St. in the Tallahassee Regional. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
