College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 7, 2007)

VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanderbilt (41-9), winners of eight of its last nine games, has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

This is the sixth poll this season Vanderbilt has been ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball.

The Commodores also lead the Southeastern Conference with a 17-7 record. The 17 SEC wins are the most in school history which eclipsed 16 wins in 2004 and 2006. In addition, Vanderbilt has reached the 40-win plateau for just the second time in school history and for the first time during the regular season.

No. 2 Florida St. (42-7) has been just as impressive. The Seminoles are off to the best start of any baseball team in school history through 49 games. FSU, with an Atlantic Coast Conference best 20-4 record, has captured 20 wins in league competition for just the third time in school history. The Seminoles went 22-2 in 1999 and 20-4 in 2001.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot. San Diego continues to roll with nine straight wins. Another west coast team, Long Beach St., has captured eight victories in a row and sits in first place in the Big West Conference with a 10-2 record. Two teams fell out of the top 30 in Cal. St. Fullerton (1-3 last week) as well as College of Charleston (2-2). Two new teams to the poll this week include Long Beach St. (30-14) and Coastal Carolina (38-9).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
