College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanderbilt (51-11), winners of 19 of its last 21 games, has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

This is the ninth poll this season Vanderbilt has been ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball. The Commodores won the regular-season Southeastern Conference title with a 22-8 record and captured the SEC tournament over the past weekend with a 7-4 win over Arkansas.

Vanderbilt became the first team ever to lose the first game of the tournament and rebound to win five straight since the tourney went to the current format in 1996. The Commodores were the first SEC team to win both the regular season and tournament title since 1996.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot. Oral Roberts has won 16 straight games. ORU, which captured the Mid-Continent regular-season title with a glistening 19-1 record, won the conference tournament over the past weekend. N.C. Charlotte, winners of the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season title and conference tournament, has won nine straight. Another team on a roll is Coastal Carolina which won the Big South Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Coastal has won six straight games. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Oklahoma St. (0-3 last week), UCLA (1-2), N.C. State (1-2) and St. John's (1-2). Four new teams in the poll this week are Creighton (44-14, winners of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament), Oral Roberts, N.C. Charlotte and Rutgers (41-19, winners of the Big East tournament).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RHP Jess Todd, Arkansas: Todd struck out the first nine batters he faced on his way to a Southeastern Conference tournament record 17 strikeouts in eight innings as the Razorbacks beat South Carolina, 6-0. Todd limited the Gamecocks to two hits and allowed one walk

3B Brandon Waring, Wofford: Waring put up monster numbers in the Southern Conference tournament over five games as he belted 5 home runs, a triple and hit .560 (14-for-25) with 9 runs scored, 16 RBIs and 31 total bases. He set Southern Conference tournament records for hits, homers, RBIs and total bases. Waring posted a slugging percentage of 1.240 and amazingly did not receive a single walk. On defense, he handled 17 chances at third base without an error.

RHP/LHP Pat Venditte, Creighton: Creighton ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte was named MVP of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament as the Bluejays won their first-ever conference tournament title with a 10-9 win over Wichita St. In that game, he pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings, tying a career-high 10 strikeouts in his first collegiate start as he received a no decision. Three days earlier in the tournament against Southern Illinois, he pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He retired the first 14 batters he faced in that outing as he allowed a single hit with three strikeouts. In two tournament appearances, he allowed one run on six hits in 12 innings of work with 13 strikeouts.
