College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 30, 2007)

VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanderbilt (39-8), winners of seven straight, has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

Florida St., ranked No. 1 the previous six weeks, slipped to second after winning two of three over the past weekend against Miami, Fla. Vanderbilt is tied for first place in the Southeastern Conference with a 15-6 record. Over four games last week (one against Tennessee Tech and three against Florida), the Commodores hit .429 with 17 doubles 7 homers and 45 RBI. This is the fifth poll this season by Collegiate Baseball that Vanderbilt has been ranked No. 1. Florida St. still leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with a glistening 17-4 mark.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot. St. John’s leads the Big East with a 14-4 record and has won 11 straight. Rice has captured 10 in a row. UCLA jumped from 18th to 11th this week after beating Arizona two of three. The Bruins are first in the Pac-10 Conference with a 10-2 record. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in N.C. Charlotte (2-2 last week), Houston (2-2) and Rutgers (1-2). New teams in the poll this week are St. John’s (29-12 overall), Missouri (31-12, second in the Big 12 Conference with a 12-6 record) and U.C. Riverside (27-16, 3-game series sweep over Cal. St. Fullerton last weekend and tied for first in the Big West Conference at 7-2). Two teams which just missed being in the poll were No. 31 Central Michigan (29-13, 9 wins in a row and 22 victories in last 25 games) and No. 32 Long Beach St. (27-14, tied for first in Big West with 7-2 mark).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
