College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 23, 2007)

FLORIDA STATE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida State University (37-6) has been ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Seminoles won two of three over North Carolina last weekend and lead the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 15-3 record. FSU has won seven of its last nine games. The Seminoles are hitting .364 as a team and are averaging 9.3 runs per contest. The pitching staff has a 3.23 ERA with 341 strikeouts and 145 walks.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot led by UCLA. The Bruins have won seven straight and 14 of their last 16 games as the team sits at 8-1 in Pac-10 play. UCLA jumped from 24th to 18th this week. Another hot team is Cal. St. Fullerton which has won seven in a row. The Titans are first in the Big West Conference with a 7-2 record. Georgia Tech. is also coming on strong with 13 wins in its last 16 games while Houston has been on a roll in Conference USA games with a 9-3 record as the Cougars sit in second place. Over the past weekend, Houston swept a 3-game series at Tulane. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in N.C. State (1-3 last week), Tulane (1-3), and Cal Poly SLO (1-2).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B Ryan Heath, Oakland: Heath had one of those days that come along once in a century. During a doubleheader against Western Illinois, he hit 4 home runs, including 3 grand slams, and posted 14 RBIs. In the first game, a 20-2 Oakland win, he was 3-for-3 with two grand slams, a double and a career-high 9 RBIs along with 3 runs scored. In the nightcap, he went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a solo home run, 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored in a 22-8 loss to Western Illinois. Heath had not hit a home run this season prior to the doubleheader and had never hit a grand slam before.

LHP Scott Barnes, St. John’s: Barnes threw the first no-hitter in St. John’s Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer’s 12-year tenure at the school as he blanked Georgetown, 16-0 and posted a career-high 14 strikeouts.

RHP Dan Hudson, Old Dominion: Hudson fanned a career-high 15 batters as Old Dominion defeated Delaware, 2-1. Hudson pitched his first complete game of the year with no walks. He only allowed one hit after the fourth inning.
