College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 16, 2007)

FLORIDA STATE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida State University (35-4) has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Seminoles swept a 3-game series at home against Virginia Tech. over the past weekend and have the top record in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 13-2.

FSU is hitting .370 as a team with 114 doubles, 14 triples and 27 homers in 39 games. The pitching staff has a 3.02 ERA with 310 strikeouts and 129 walks.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot led by Michigan with 16 consecutive wins. Arizona has won 16 of its last 17, UCLA 11 of its last 13 (8-1 in Pac-10 games which is tied for the lead with Arizona), N.C. Charlotte 14 of its last 16 and Stetson 10 straight wins. Another hot team is Cal Poly SLO which leads the Big West with a 7-2 conference record after beating U.C. Irvine two of three. Five teams fell out of the poll this week in Florida (0-4 last week), Kentucky (1-3), Coastal Carolina (2-2), Missouri (1-2) and Louisiana-Lafayette (2-2).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Brad Brach, Monmouth: Brach fired the first no-hitter at Monmouth since 1990 as he recorded a 2-0 win over Long Island. He had a perfect game going with one out in the ninth until he allowed a walk on a 3-2 pitch. It was the only batter to reach base. Brach struck out six batters as he improved to 4-1.

OF Kellen Kulbacki, James Madison: Kulbacki went 11-for-16 at the plate as he belted 4 home runs over 4 games with 3 doubles, 11 RBI and 10 runs scored. He also walked 5 times and stole a base.

RHP Preston Guilmet, Arizona: Guilmet struck out a career-high 15 Stanford batters in an 8-1 win over the Cardinal. Guilmet, who has gone nine innings in each of his last four starts, struck out the side in four innings as he improved to 7-0 on the season with a Pac-10-best ERA of 1.58.

RHP Brett Durand, Delta State.: On the 45th anniversary of Delta State’s first no-hitter, Durand tossed the eighth no-hitter in program history as he worked nine innings in a 7-0 win over Arkansas-Monticello. He set down the final 17 batters of the game. He was one walk and a hit batter away from a perfect game. Durand finished with 8 strikeouts.

OF Bryan Hagerich, Delaware: Hagerich went 8-for-13 at the plate with 4 home runs, 9 RBI and 6 runs scored over four games last week. He was also walked 5 times and hit by a pitch as he was on base 14 times in 19 plate appearances.
