College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 12, 2007)

VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanderbilt University (18-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Commodores are off to the best start in school history and sport a .340 team batting average with 19 homers, 48 doubles and 6 triples in 18 games. The pitching staff has a 2.33 ERA and has fanned 188 batters (10.4 strikeouts per game) while walking only 40 for a better than 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Two teams just behind Vanderbilt are Florida St. (20-0) and North Carolina (15-1). The Seminoles are off to the best start in school history while the Tar Heels have been superb all season long. Over the past weekend, North Carolina swept a 3-game series against Miami, Fla. in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the first time in history to take an early 3-0 record in Atlantic Coast Conference action.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been outstanding. Kentucky jumped from 18th to 12th this week with a perfect 16-0 record. Oregon St. (17-3) has won six straight along with Auburn (17-2). Virginia Military Institute (12-3) is ranked this week after winning seven straight games. Oklahoma St. (12-4) has won 7 of its last 8. And Oklahoma (13-5) is ranked this week after winning 11 of its last 12 games. In key series over the past weekend, East Carolina stunned Cal. St. Fullerton by sweeping the 3-game series in Greenville, N.C. It marked the first time in school history the Pirates swept a series over a top 10 opponent. Southern California won two of three from Stanford at Stanford. Long Beach St. won two of three against Arizona St. in Tempe, Ariz.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B Justin Bour, George Mason: Bour put together one of the best weeks in college baseball history as he went 10-for-20 with 7 home runs, 19 RBI, 9 runs scored and posted a 1.650 slugging percentage over four games. Only a freshman, Bour set a school record with 2 grand slams and 9 RBI in a game against Coppin St. He set a school record with 3 grand slams in a season (all hit during the past week). He set a school record for most consecutive multi-homer games with three. In addition, he tied a school record with 3 home runs in one game against Coppin St.

LHP Brandon Turner, Mount Vernon Nazarene: Turner fired the 14th no-hitter in school history during a 3-0, 7-inning win over Shawnee St. Making his first start of the season, he retired the first 17 batters he faced before walking a batter with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. He finished with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in seven innings. It was only the second complete game of his career and first shutout.

LHP David Price, Vanderbilt: Price struck out 16 batters during a 4-hit, 9-inning complete game as the Commodores won, 2-1. He gave up a solo homer in the second and then retired the next 12 batters, seven via strikeout. After giving up his only walk in the sixth, Price then retired the next seven in order, five by strikeout. Two of the four hits were infield singles in the ninth.
