College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 5, 2007)

RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rice University (1-0) has been ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season NCAA Division I baseball poll of the season conducted by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The Owls, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season poll last December, opened up with a 5-0 win over NCAA Division II power Central Missouri. Five Rice pitchers combined for the opening day shutout by holding their opponent to three hits while striking out 10.

POLL NOTES: Sixteen of the top 30 teams have not started their season yet. Six teams have been impressive in the early going. Defending national champion Oregon St. (4-0) started the year off with a 4-game sweep at Hawaii-Hilo, including a combined no-hitter in the season opener. After winning the national title last year, the Beavers suffered heavy losses as seven starting position players left along with the team’s top three pitchers.

Cal. St. Fullerton (3-0) swept a 3-game series at home against Stanford while Florida St. (3-0) swept three in a row against Tennessee. Arizona St. (3-0) captured its 3-game series against Southern Utah as the Sun Devils outscored the Thunderbirds, 61-8. In-state rival Arizona (3-0) was impressive with a 3-game sweep at home against Gonzaga. The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs, 36-4. San Diego (5-1) has been superb with a 3-game sweep of Cal Poly SLO and victories in two of three games against Texas. San Diego LHP Brian Matusz struck out 13 Cal Poly batters in six scoreless innings during his first outing of the season and followed that up with one earned run in 5 2/3 innings against the Longhorns with eight strikeouts.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Preston Guilmet, Arizona: Guilmet flirted with the seventh no-hitter in Arizona history for eight strong innings in the Wildcats' season-opener against Gonzaga. He allowed only three base runners (two walks and one hit batter) over the first eight innings and at one point retired 17 straight Bulldog hitters before allowing a base hit to lead off the top of the ninth. He allowed only one hit over 8 1/3 innings and struck out four as he threw 105 pitches in a 14-0 Arizona victory.

RHP Bryan Henry, Florida St.: Henry struck out 11 batters in six innings of work as the Seminoles beat Tennessee, 9-2 in the season opener. The 11 strikeouts were one shy of his career high set last year against Duke. Henry fanned eight of the first 10 batters he faced.

OF Matt Spencer, Arizona St.: Spencer had a monster 3-game series against Southern Utah as he went 7-for-9 with 2 home runs, including a grand slam, and 13 RBIs.
