College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 8, 2006)

NORTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — North Carolina (39-8) has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Tar Heels, winners of eight straight and 16 of their last 18 games, were in the midst of an 8-day layoff due to final exams last week and did not play any games.

Heading into last week, North Carolina led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 57 homers. The pitching staff has not surrendered a homer over its last 13 games. The Tar heel pitching staff, which has a 3.16 ERA, has allowed more than three earned runs just once over its last 12 games.

The Tar Heels’ 39-8 overall record is the best in school history through 47 games. North Carolina is No. 1 in the ACC with an 18-6 mark and has won 10 consecutive league games.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Defending national champion Texas has won 8 straight, Tulane 12 of its last 13, Oklahoma St. 11 in a row and Georgia 7 consecutive. Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Washington (1-3 last week), Vanderbilt (1-2), and Troy (1-2).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
