College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 29, 2006) RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Rice University (50-10) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball. The Owls, winners of 10 straight and 32 of their last 34 games, captured the Conference USA tournament title with four consecutive wins. It marked the program’s 11th consecutive conference title. Rice also won the regular-season Conference USA championship with a 22-2 record. Seven of Rice’s 10 losses have been by a single run. Rice, which has eclipsed the 50-win plateau for the fourth time since 1999, has the second highest win total in school history heading into regional competition. The 1999 squad won 52 prior to regional play. Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. Fresno St. has won 15 in a row, Clemson 19 of its last 20, Mississippi 9 of its last 10 while Cal. St. Fullerton and Kansas have captured 7 straight. Kansas, the sixth seed in the Big 12 Tournament, won the championship game over Nebraska. Three teams which fell out of the top 30 this week include San Francisco (1-2 record last week), Wake Forest (0-2) and Hawaii (3-2). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
