College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 22, 2006)

RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rice University (46-10) has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Owls, winners of 28 of their last 30 games, rolled to the Conference USA championship with a 22-2 record. Seven of Rice’s 10 losses have been by a single run. The Owls beat Louisiana St. last week and also swept a 3-game series against Marshall. During those four games, Rice hit .399 as a team with 11 home runs, including three grand slams.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been red-hot. Clemson has won 15 straight while Georgia has won 14 of its last 15. Oklahoma St., now second in the Big 12 Conference with an 18-9 mark, has won its last six conference series. Tulane has won 10 of its last 11 contests. Michigan has won 7 of its last 8 games. During those seven victories, the Wolverines have allowed 1 run or less each game and have shutout opponents 4 times. Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Baylor (1-3 last week), South Carolina (2-2) and Winthrop (1-2). Three new teams to the poll include San Francisco (37-19), Troy (41-14) and Vanderbilt (33-23).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
