College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

NORTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — North Carolina (39-8) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Tar Heels, winners of eight straight and 16 of their last 18 games, hit 10 home runs last week over five games and currently lead the Atlantic Coast Conference with 57 homers. The pitching staff has not surrendered a homer over the last 13 games. North Carolina’s pitching staff, which has a 3.16 ERA, have allowed more than three earned runs just once over its last 12 games.

The Tar Heels’ 39-8 overall record is the best in school history through 47 games. North Carolina is No. 1 in the ACC with an 18-6 mark and has won 10 straight league games.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Nebraska has won 18 of its last 19 while Mississippi has strung together 10 consecutive wins. Rice has also been on a tear with seven straight victories and 17 consecutive wins in Conference USA action. Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Mississippi St. (1-4 last week), College of Charleston (0-1) and Baylor (2-3).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Bobby Blevins, LeMoyne: Blevins put together one of the best weeks in college baseball history as he struck out 32 batters over a pair of 2-hit shutouts. He fanned 14 batters during a 2-hitter against St. Peter’s last Monday. He followed that up with 18 strikeouts in a 2-hit shutout against Canisius on Saturday. He walked one in each win. On the season, Blevins has fanned 73 in 70 2/3 innings.

LHP Glenn Swanson, U.C. Irvine: Swanson pitched U.C. Irvine’s first no-hitter in 32 years during a 7-0 win over San Diego last Tuesday. He only threw 89 pitches as he struck out a career-high 14 batters with one walk to record the program’s third no-hitter and his fourth career complete game.

LHP Drew Webster, Southern Arkansas: Webster threw a no-hitter against Henderson State during a 2-0 victory. He struck out six and walked two.

OF Emeel Salem, Alabama: Salem reached base 18 times in 22 plate appearances last week over four games for a whopping .818 on-base mark. He registered 13 hits in 17 at bats (.765) as he scored 12 runs with 2 doubles, 2 triples and a home run. Salem scored the winning run in three games and ended the week by reaching base safely 11 consecutive times (6 hits, 4 walks, 1 HBP). The Alabama record is 14 consecutives times on base while the NCAA is 18 straight times on base.

INF Marquez Smith, Clemson: Smith belted 4 home runs with 7 RBIs last week and did not commit an error in 12 chances at third base. He also scored 6 runs. Smith doubled the number of homers he had for the season in one week as he now is hitting .281 with 8 homers and 29 RBIs in 43 games.
