PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 24, 2006)

NORTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — North Carolina (34-8) has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Tar Heels, winners of 11 of their last 13 games, swept a 3-game series against Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina St. over the past weekend. The sweep marked the first series win over its in-state rival since 2002. The Tar Heels have now won seven straight ACC games dating to the series finale at Miami (Fla.).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Notre Dame has won 22 in a row and made a substantial jump from 16th to 8th this week. The Fighting Irish have now won more consecutive games than at any other time in the program's 114-year history. Oklahoma is another team on a roll. The Sooners have won 10 straight. The last time OU won 10 consecutive games was during the 1998 season when the Sooners opened the year with a 12-game winning streak. Oregon St. continues to roll with seven straight wins and victories in 16 of its last 18 games. Houston, second in Conference USA with a 12-3 record, has won 16 of its last 20 games.

Noteworthy series over the past weekend saw Nebraska knock off Texas two of three in Austin, Tex. Georgia Tech. swept a 3-game series at Florida St. Alabama swept a 3-game series at home against Vanderbilt. Kentucky swept a 3-game series against South Carolina, and Mississippi swept three straight from LSU.

Teams that dropped out of the poll this week were Southern California (1-3 last week), LSU (0-4), San Diego (1-3), and James Madison (1-4).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
