College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 6, 2006)

GEORGIA TECH. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Georgia Tech. (13-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Yellow Jackets are off to the third best start in school history. Tech. went 17-0 in 2003 and 16-0 in 1987. The Yellow Jackets are hitting .327 as a team and also have a team ERA of 3.24. Over the past week, Tech. swept a 3-game series against Rutgers by scores of 25-8, 12-2 and 11-4.

Last week’s No. 1 team, Clemson (7-2) slipped to third after splitting a 2-game series with South Carolina over the past weekend. The pitching staff has an impressive 1.46 ERA.

Poll Notes: It was a strange week with seven teams ranked from 11-20 in last week's poll posting two or three losses. In the entire top 30, 10 teams lost two or more games over the past week. Therefore, plenty of movement is seen in this week’s poll. Still, there are several red-hot teams. Outside of Georgia Tech. winning its first 13 games of the season, Florida St. has won 11 straight, Wichita St. 9 in a row, Alabama 7 consecutive, Mississippi St. six in a row while Arkansas has won 13 of its first 14 contests and North Carolina 10 of its first 11. Two teams fell out of the poll in Hawaii (2-3 last week) and Winthrop (2-2).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B Charlie Yarbrough, Eastern Kentucky: Yarbrough put up monster numbers last week as he belted 5 home runs and 11 RBI in a 2-game series sweep of Oakland as he went 7-for-9. He hit three home runs in the second game of the series, tying a Colonel single-game record and added 7 RBI.

DH Brendan Enick, Wake Forest: After falling out of the starting lineup for 7 straight games, the designated hitter went wild. In three games last week, he went 11-for-14 with 2 homers, 3 doubles, and 12 RBI. In a game against Xavier, he cracked a grand slam and a solo home run. In another against Wright St., he went 4-for-4 with a single-game school record tying three doubles.

DH/P Ike Davis, Arizona St.: Davis belted two grand slams as he went 10-for-17 over four games with 13 RBI and four extra base hits. As a pitcher, he also was superb as he was instrumental in helping the Sun Devils beat Texas Tech and Auburn with 8 1/3 combined innings of work.

LHP Manny Miguelez, Miami (Fla.): Miguelez needed just 97 pitches to throw a complete game 1-hitter against Indiana. He registered eight strikeouts and held the Hoosiers hitless the final eight innings. The complete-game 1-hitter was the first for the Hurricanes since the 2003 baseball season.
