College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 20, 2006)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. (21-2) has been ranked No. 1 for the second time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Seminoles won two of three at Virginia Tech over the past weekend and have been victorious in 18 of their last 19 games. Florida St. is 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Poll Notes: A number of teams have put together long winning streaks, including James Madison (16 in a row), Mississippi St. (15), Miami, Fla. (15), Kansas St. (15), Creighton (15), Nebraska (11) and Old Dominion (11). Another red-hot team has been Cal. St. Fullerton which has now won 17 of its last 20 games, including eight in a row. In key series last weekend, Virginia swept a 3-game set at home against Clemson, Kentucky took two of three at home against Louisiana St., North Carolina St. took two of three at home against Georgia Tech., Mississippi St. took two straight at home against Tennessee with the third game being rained out. Florida knocked off Arkansas two of three, and Wichita St. swept a 3-game series at Long Beach St. Five teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Long Beach St. (0-3), Pepperdine (2-1), Washington (0-2), Tulane (2-2) and Georgia (3-2).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Sergio Perez, Tampa: Perez threw the third no-hitter in school history in a 12-0 win over Barry University. He was only two walks away from a perfect game as he struck out a career-high 15 batters.

RHP Miles Morgan, Texas Tech.: Morgan turned in one of the best performances by a Texas Tech. pitcher in school history as he struck out 15 University of Texas batters in a 2-1 win. During his 132-pitch effort, he didn't walk a batter. He fell only two strikeouts short of the Big 12 Conference record. Morgan's 15 strikeouts were the most against Texas since the 1999 season when Baylor fanned 16 batters.

1B/RF Jimmy Van Ostrand, Cal Poly SLO: Van Ostrand had a monster week in only two games for the Mustangs. Against the University of Washington, he belted 4 home runs with 10 RBI as he went 4-for-7 at the plate. He hit two homers against the Huskies in game one and two more in the second game.

OF/DH Jay Cox, North Carolina: Cox led the Tar Heels with 4 home runs, 10 RBI, 8 runs scored and 22 total bases as he went 9-for-22 at the plate in five games.
