College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 13, 2006)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. (18-1) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Seminoles have won 15 in a row and are in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 3-0 record.

Last week’s No. 1 ranked team was Georgia Tech (16-1). The Yellow Jackets barely slipped to second after suffering their first loss of the season to Viginia over the past weekend. Georgia Tech. is 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after taking two of three from the Cavaliers. Georgia Tech. had won 16 straight before the setback which was tied for the second best start in school history.

Poll Notes: A number of teams have put together long winning streaks, including Wichita St. (13), Mississippi St. (11), Miami, Fla. (11), Kansas St. (11) and James Madison (11). A trio of other teams have also won seven straight in Nebraska, Arkansas and Oklahoma. In the past 30 years, only two other Oklahoma Sooner (16-4) teams have had a better start after 20 games. Teams that fell out of the poll this week include Texas A&M (4 straight losses last week), Mississippi (2-3), Cal Poly SLO (1-2) and Alabama (1-3).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

C Chris Gradoville, Creighton: Gradoville had one of the most remarkable weeks in school history as he belted 6 home runs and drove in 18 runs in five games as he hit .500 (11-for-22) and scored 8 runs. Three of the games were against Tennessee Tech with single games against Vanderbilt and Belmont.

1B Mike Hoefs, Metro St. College Of Denver: Hoefs went 14-for-17 with 5 home runs which included a trio of grand slams over a 4-game series with St. Cloud St. If that wasn't enough, the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder had 17 RBIs and scored 9 runs. Two of the grand slams were game winners while he also hit 3 doubles.

LHP David Price, Vanderbilt: Price struck out a career-high 15 batters in only seven innings against Brown. Six of the first nine outs were via strikeout. He gave up only one walk.

RHP Tim Lincecum and LHP Nick Hagadone, Washington: This duo combined for the University of Washington's first no-hitter in 37 years as the Huskies beat Santa Clara, 9-0. Lincecum threw the first six innings while Hagadone retired all nine batters he faced over the final three to wrap up the no-hitter. It was the first no-hitter by Washington since the 1969 season. The duo combined to strike out 15 batters (11 by Linceum and 4 by Hagadone). Amazingly, Lincecum had a blister on his throwing finger starting with the third inning, so he was not able to throw his fastball often after that point.

3B Marc Maddox, Southern Mississippi: Maddox raised his batting average 92 points over five games last week as he was 9-for-18 at the plate with 4 homers and 13 RBI.
