College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 6, 2006)

FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Florida (0-0) has been ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season poll of the 2006 NCAA Division I baseball season as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The Gators, ranked second in the pre-season poll compiled last December, jumped to the top spot when pre-
season No. 1 Texas was swept three straight to start the season at the University of San Diego.

It marked the first-ever sweep of a No. 1 ranked team by the Toreros. With the trio of losses, the Longhorns fell to 0-3 for only the second time since 1938. The other came during the 2001 season when Texas opened 0-4. San Diego captured the three games by scores of 4-2, 6-0 and 12-8. The Toreros, ranked 36th in the pre-season poll by Collegiate Baseball, moved to 13th this week while Texas slipped to 14th.

Poll Notes: Stanford started the season on a high note by sweeping Cal. St. Fullerton three straight in games played at Stanford. Since 1996, Cal. St. Fullerton only has a 2-15 record during that span in games played at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond. Long Beach St. also began the season well with a 3-game sweep of Southern California. Another west coast team doing extremely well is Cal Poly SLO. The Mustangs are 5-1 and swept a 3-game series against highly regarded Fresno St. one week ago. In other top 30 action, Winthrop won two of three at Miami, Fla. and Tennessee beat Florida Atlantic two of three. Sixteen of the top 30 teams have not started their season.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
