(www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Clemson University (5-1) has
been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball
newspaper’s poll of NCAA Division I baseball.
Florida (8-3), ranked No. 1 the previous three
polls, slipped to seventh after dropping two games last week. The Gators lost
14-5 to Missouri and 4-0 to Wake Forest.
Clemson’s pitching staff has been superb
through six games with a team ERA of 0.83. The staff has struck out 51 batters
and walked only 17 batters for a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Poll Notes:
Other red-hot teams this week include Georgia
Tech. (10 straight wins), Arkansas (9 consecutive victories), Louisiana St. (8
wins in a row), North Carolina (7 straight wins), and Hawaii (7 wins in last 8
games). Four teams fell out of the poll this week. San Diego (7-6), a team which
had swept a 3-game series against Texas several weeks ago, now has lost five
straight games, including a trio against Georgia over the past weekend. Notre
Dame started the season 2-2 with losses to Memphis and Oklahoma and barely fell
out of the top 30. Missouri (5-4) started the weekend in high style by beating
Florida 14-5. But the Tigers then lost a pair to Wake Forest and Ohio St. The
final team to fall out of the top 30 was Southern Cal. (8-7) which dropped two
of three at Hawaii.
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
