College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 13, 2006)

FLORIDA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Florida (3-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll.

The Gators opened the season last weekend with a 3-game sweep of Cincinnati. Florida outscored the Bearcats, 40-8 with 10-0, 10-4 and 20-4 victories. The Gator offense belted seven home runs, four doubles and a triple. As far as pitching, the staff registered 25 strikeouts in those three games.

Poll Notes: North Carolina St. started the year with a 6-0 record and is ranked 19th this week. The Wolfpack, which has scored 105 runs in six games, swept 3-game series to kick off the season against Delaware St. and Hofstra. Two other teams which entered the poll this week were Gonzaga and Kansas. Gonzaga, off to a 6-1 record with six straight wins, knocked off two top 10 teams last weekend in No. 2 Oregon St. and previously 10th ranked Arizona St. Kansas (6-2) stunned No. 11 Stanford two of three in games played at Stanford. Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Arizona St., Florida Atlantic and Southern Mississippi. The Sun Devils had a horrible week, going 0-3 at the Coca-Cola Classic with losses to Gonzaga, Oregon St. and Nevada. The ASU pitching staff walked 15 batters against Oregon St. Florida Atlantic, expected to field a powerful team in 2006, has started slowly with a 2-4 record. Over the past weekend, Florida Atlantic lost two of three to Southern Illinois.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

3B Matt Mangini, North Carolina St.: Mangini continued his remarkable start to the 2006 season with his second incredible 3-game series in as many weekends. Against Hofstra, he went 9-for-12 with 3 triples, one double, 8 runs scored and 7 RBIs. In six games this season, Mangini is batting .800 (20-for-25) with 3 triples, 2 doubles, 13 runs scored and 14 RBIs. It marks the second straight Louisville Slugger National Player of The Week honor for Mangini.

RHP Casey Hudspeth, South Florida: In his 2006 debut, Hudspeth struck out 10 batters while walking none in five innings against Northwestern. He gave up no earned runs as South Florida beat Northwestern, 5-2. The 10 strikeouts were one shy of his career high (11, three times).
