College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 9, 2005)

TULANE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tulane has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll for the fifth straight week.

The Green Wave (42-8) has won 22 of their last 25 games and were 4-0 last week. Over the past week, Tulane beat New Orleans and then swept a three-game series against Memphis. On the season, Tulane has hit 60 home runs in 50 games led by Micah Owings (14) and Brad Emaus (11).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot lately. College of Charleston has won nine straight, St. John’s 24 of its last 28 games and Oregon St. has won five in a row and eight of its last nine. Florida St. won four games last week with a victory at Florida and a three-game sweep at Maryland. Tennessee also had a big week as the Volunteers swept three games at home against South Carolina and now sit on top of the rugged Southeastern Conference with a 15-8 mark. Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in South Carolina (four consecutive losses), Missouri (1-3) and Central Florida (1-2).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OF Brian Pettway, Mississippi: Pettway had a monster week as he belted five home runs and 12 RBI over five games and hit home runs in four straight games. His most memorable game was a two home run game and career-high six RBI in the Rebels' 10-2 win over Murray State.

2B J.R. Kyes, Illinois: Kyes belted four home runs, including a walk-off 3-run shot to win one game and a grand slam in another as he collected 13 RBIs over four games against Northwestern. He also scored nine runs and posted a 1.471 slugging percentage and .600 on base percentage from the leadoff spot in the batting order.

P Ryan Fecteau, Saint Anselm: Fecteau threw a nine inning no hitter and struck out 11 for the Hawks in a 1-0 win over American International. The only two batters who got on base were via a walk and hit by pitch.
