College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 23, 2005)

TULANE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tulane has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll for the seventh straight week.

The Green Wave (47-9) has won 27 of their last 31 games and were 2-1 last week. Over the past weekend, Tulane won two of three over No. 27 ranked Texas Christian.

As a team, Tulane’s pitching staff averages 8.84 strikeouts per game and has a 3.26 strikeout to walk ratio (495 punchouts and 152 free passes in 497 1/3 innings). In the Green Wave’s 5-1 win over Texas Christian in the regular-season finale, Tulane tied a school record for wins in a regular season with 47. The win total matches the mark set in 2001 when the Green Wave won the Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles, swept the field at the NCAA New Orleans Regional, defeated Louisiana St. in the Super Regionals and advanced to the
College World Series for the first time in school history.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red hot lately. The hottest is undoubtedly Clemson which has won nine straight games and swept a 3-game series against powerful Miami, Fla. over the past weekend. The Tigers beat the Hurricanes by scores of 15-5, 9-2 and 6-2 as Miami suffered their first 3-game series sweep since the 2002 season. In game one against Miami, Clemson handed National Player of The Year candidate Cesar Carrillo his first collegiate loss in 25 decisions. Other teams playing well include Nebraska (5-0 last week), Florida (4-0) and St. John’s (4-0). Two teams fell out of the poll in Arkansas (0-3 last week) and Troy (1-3).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
