TULANE NO. 1 IN
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Tulane has been ranked No. 1
in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll for the
sixth straight week.
The Green Wave (45-8) has won 25 of their last
28 games and were 3-0 last week. Over the past week, Tulane swept a 3-game
series at St. Louis. By taking all three games, the Green Wave claimed its 11th
sweep of the 2005 season.
One of the common themes throughout the 2005
season has been Tulane's ability to get on base via the walk (271) while the
pitching staff has a superb strikeout to walk ratio (463 strikeouts and 145
walks). If the Green Wave can maintain its average 8.74 strikeouts per game,
Tulane will eclipse the school record for total strikeouts.
Poll Notes:
Several teams have been red hot lately. Cal. St.
Fullerton has won 11 of its last 12 games. Oregon St. moved from eighth to third
this week after winning eight in a row and 12 of its last 13, including three
straight victories at Washington last weekend. The Beavers are first in the
Pac-10 Conference with a 17-4 record. Florida St. won five straight games last
week, including three straight over North Carolina. Southern California also has
a 5-game winning streak while Troy University has won six straight. Coastal
Carolina had a memorable week going 5-0 with two wins over Georgia Tech (ranked
fifth at the time) and North Carolina. St. John’s continues to roll with a 35-14
overall record. The Red Storm pitching staff has thrown nine shutouts this
season, the most since the 1968 College World Series team had 13.
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
