CAL. ST. FULLERTON NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Defending national champion Cal. St. Fullerton (20-7) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

Georgia Tech. ranked No. 1 last week after winning 27 of 28 Atlantic Coast Conference contests dating back to last season, slipped to third after posting a 2-2 week with losses to Western Carolina and Maryland while picking up two wins against the Terrapins.

Cal. St. Fullerton won three of four games last week, including two of three over U.C. Irvine and a mid-week game against UCLA. The Titans are hitting .324 as a team and have a glistening .973 team fielding percentage with 27 errors all season. The pitching staff has a better than 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio (212 strikeouts and 83 walks).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been extremely hot lately. North Carolina has won nine straight games and is 22-0 at home this season. College of Charleston has won 10 in a row which includes a 12-0 record in Southern Conference games. Missouri has won 15 of its last 16 games while Southern Mississippi has won 10 consecutive contests. Oregon St., with a superb 24-4 overall record and 3-0 mark in the Pac-10 Conference, has won seven straight. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Michigan (four straight losses against Minnesota to kick off Big Ten Conference play), Wichita St. (1-3), Coastal Carolina (2-3) and Oklahoma St. (2-3).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
