POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Defending national champion
Cal. St. Fullerton (20-7) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball
newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.
Georgia Tech. ranked No. 1 last week after
winning 27 of 28 Atlantic Coast Conference contests dating back to last season,
slipped to third after posting a 2-2 week with losses to Western Carolina and
Maryland while picking up two wins against the Terrapins.
Cal. St. Fullerton won three of four games
last week, including two of three over U.C. Irvine and a mid-week game against
UCLA. The Titans are hitting .324 as a team and have a glistening .973 team
fielding percentage with 27 errors all season. The pitching staff has a better
than 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio (212 strikeouts and 83 walks).
Poll Notes:
Several teams have been extremely hot lately.
North Carolina has won nine straight games and is 22-0 at home this season.
College of Charleston has won 10 in a row which includes a 12-0 record in
Southern Conference games. Missouri has won 15 of its last 16 games while
Southern Mississippi has won 10 consecutive contests. Oregon St., with a superb
24-4 overall record and 3-0 mark in the Pac-10 Conference, has won seven
straight. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Michigan (four straight
losses against Minnesota to kick off Big Ten Conference play), Wichita St.
(1-3), Coastal Carolina (2-3) and Oklahoma St. (2-3).
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Kenny Maiques, Rio Hondo
College: Maiques threw a seven
inning perfect game in a 6-0 win over Mt. San Jacinto. He struck out 17
batters out of the 21 outs. The other four outs were infield outs as no balls
left the infield. Maiques struck out the side four out of seven innings.

LHP Cory Lapinski, Illinois
Wesleyan: Lapinski struck out 19
batters in a 6-1 win over Augustana through eight innings. Earlier in the week
he struck out five in two innings of relief. For the entire week, Lapinski
fanned 24 batters in 10 innings of work. |

RHP Anthony Varvaro, St.
John’s: Varvaro struck out a
career-high 17 batters in eight innings to set a modern day record in leading
the Red Storm to a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh. He struck out the side in the
first inning and then fanned two every inning from the second to eighth. His
17 strikeouts were one shy of the Big East Conference record in a single game
as he didn’t walk a batter. |

Max Scherzer and Michael
Cole, Missouri: This duo combined
for the first no-hitter at Missouri since 1981 as the Tigers beat Texas Tech.,
25-0. Scherzer struck out a career-high 14 batters in seven innings of work
while Cole pitched the final two innings and struck out four more Red Raiders. |

C Steve Ketter, Rockford:
Ketter had a remarkable week as he
belted 3 homers, 2 triples, 2 doubles and tallied 16 RBIs with 9 runs scored
as he hit .590 on the week (13-for-22). |
