College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 28, 2005)

GEORGIA TECH. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — For the second week in a row, a new team has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.

Georgia Tech. (21-4) is ranked No. 1 after winning two of three at Miami, Fla. The Yellow Jackets are first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 11-1 record and have won 27 of their last 28 ACC contests dating back to last season. Georgia Tech has now won 11 straight ACC weekend series.

Defending national champion Cal. St. Fullerton, ranked No. 1 last week, dropped to second after losing two of three against Long Beach St.

Poll Notes: It was one of the bizarre weeks in the history of the Collegiate Baseball top 30 as the top six teams in the nation one week ago all lost two games. In fact, of the top 30 teams, only four teams escaped without a loss in Texas (2-0 last week), North Carolina (5-0), Michigan (4-0), and College of Charleston (4-0). Several teams have been red-hot. Michigan has won nine straight games as the Wolverines moved from 22nd to 19th this week. Auburn entered the poll for the first time this year after having a superb week with a win at this week’s No. 1 team, Georgia Tech. in 11 innings and also two wins in three games at No. 4 Louisiana St. One team that has been up and down the poll like a yoyo the past two weeks is Baylor. One week ago the Bears swept a 3-game series against Texas after the Longhorns had been ranked No. 1 for seven consecutive polls with a glistening 21-1.
Baylor jumped from 26th to 13th last week. But during the past week, Baylor lost three times (12-0 at Texas St., and two of three games at Oklahoma St.). The Bears dropped from 13th to 22nd in this week’s poll. Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Southern California (1-2), Tennessee (2-2) and Washington (1-2). Those entering the poll this week are Auburn, Oklahoma St. and Arizona St.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

RHP Mike Mlotkowski, Oklahoma City: Mlotkowski threw a perfect game against Hastings College. During the 7-inning contest, the 6-foot-7, 250-pounder, struck out 13. RHP Chris Mason, North Carolina-Greensboro: Mason struck out a school-record 16 batters in a 6-2, 9-inning win over East Tennessee St. He did not allow a walk and gave up no earned runs on four hits.

OF Nolan Reimold, Bowling Green St.: Reimold hit 4 home runs, two doubles and knocked in 13 runs over four games last week. He was 8-for-16 at the plate with a 1.375 slugging percentage.

RHP Kevin Mulvey, Villanova: After not registering a no-hitter since 1962, the Villanova baseball team saw its second in 28 days last Saturday. This time it was Mulvey who threw the no-hitter in a seven inning, 3-0 win against Connecticut. He threw only 78 pitches and walked three. The Wildcats’ first no-hitter this season was thrown by RHP Nick Allen on Feb. 26 against Norfolk St.
