CAL. ST. FULLERTON NO. 1
IN
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — Defending national champion
Cal. St. Fullerton has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in
Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Titans (16-4) jumped to the top of the
poll after Texas, ranked No. 1 for the previous seven polls, lost three straight
to Baylor and South Carolina lost two of three to Arkansas. Cal. St. Fullerton
is hitting .355 as a team with 26 homers, 47 doubles and 7 triples in 20 games.
On the base paths, the Titans have swiped 24 bases while holding opponents to
only 8.
The pitching staff has a strikeout to walk
ratio of better than 2:1 with 168 strikeouts and 71 walks over 20 contests.
All-American Ricky Romero has led the way with a 5-1 record and 1.70 ERA.
Poll Notes:
Baylor was only 11-7 entering last week and
ranked 26th. But the Bears had a remarkable week in beating previously No. 1
Texas three straight. It marked the first 3-game sweep by Baylor of a top five
ranked team in school history. It also was the Bears’ first sweep of Texas since
1998. Because of the trio of wins and seven straight victories overall, Baylor
jumped to 13th in this week’s poll. Other red-hot teams include Nebraska (10
wins in a row) and Georgia Tech which has won 25 straight Atlantic Coast
Conference games dating back to last season. Three teams dropped out of the poll
this week in Georgia (five straight losses), Vanderbilt (2-2) and East Carolina
(1-3). Three newcomers to the poll include College of Charleston (16-4),
Washington (13-8, winners of 9 of its last 10 games) and Long Beach St. (16-9).
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
