TEXAS NO. 1 IN
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
(www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas has
been ranked No. 1 for the seventh straight Collegiate Baseball newspaper
NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Longhorns (21-1) swept a 3-game series at
home against Purdue and blanked highly regarded Rice, 7-0 earlier in the week.
Texas, which now has won five consecutive games, features a pitching staff which
has hurled six shutouts through 22 games.
Nine of the Longhorns’ 21 wins this year have
seen Texas come from behind. Texas’ offense has tallied 10 or more hits in 13 of
22 games to date. Another interesting number is that the Longhorns have extended
their home winning streak to 22 games dating back to the 2004 season.
Poll Notes:
Several other teams have also been red-hot.
Arkansas and Tennessee each have 11-game winning streaks. Mississippi has won
eight straight and East Carolina 11 of its last 12. Georgia Tech (16-2, 6-0
Atlantic Coast Conference) won its 22nd straight ACC game, a new conference
record, with a 3-game sweep at home against Wake Forest. Michigan (8-3) is off
to its best start since the 1991 team also started 8-3 after 11 games. Central
Florida (19-3) and winners of six straight, is off to its best start in school
history after 22 games.
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
