College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 7, 2005)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas is ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll of 2005.

Picked No. 1 in the nation in Collegiate Baseball's pre-season poll last December, the Longhorns opened the season with a 3-game sweep at San Diego St. with 9-3, 13-5 and 7-0 victories. During its three games with San Diego St., the Texas pitching staff compiled 35 strikeouts for an average of 11.6 per game.

While 19 of 30 teams in the first poll have yet to play a game, one key series over the past weekend pitted
defending national champion Cal. St. Fullerton against Stanford, both ranked in the top six in the nation. The Titans knocked off the Cardinal two games to one in games played at Fullerton, Calif.

Poll Notes: Four teams which have started strong include Miami, Fla. (4-0), Arizona (3-0), Long Beach St.
(5-1, two wins over Arizona St.), Florida St. (6-0) and Oklahoma St. (3-0). Rice (1-0) started the season with a bang in a 5-2 win over Central Missouri St. as pitchers Joe Savery, Josh Geer and Bryce Cox combined for a school record 21 strikeouts. The 21 strikeouts were the most since Rice started baseball in 1913.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP John Meloan, Arizona: Meloan came up four outs short of tossing the seventh no-hitter in school history during a 9-0 win over New Mexico. The Louisville Slugger pre-season All-American, who went 10-0 last season, surrendered a 2-out base hit in the top of the eighth inning and was taken out shortly after that as he threw 100 pitches in the game. In 7 2/3 innings, Meloan fanned 12 batters. He retired 23 of the first 26 batters he faced in the contest.

LHP Erik Averill, Arizona St.: The talented southpaw tossed a 9-inning complete game with a career-high 14 strikeouts in a 12-0 win over New Mexico St. Averill, who threw 119 pitches in the game, scattered seven hits and allowed no walks as he didn't allow a runner past second base. His 14 strikeouts were the most by a Sun Devil since Mike Esposito had 17 against Washington during the 2002 season.
