TEXAS NO. 1 IN
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
(www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas has
been ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight Collegiate Baseball newspaper
NCAA Division I baseball poll.
The Longhorns (15-0) swept a 3-game series at
home against Youngstown State over the past weekend. Texas, which threw two
shutouts in three games against the Penguins, not only equaled their best start
since 1995 with 15 straight wins to open the 2005 campaign, but the first
victory over Youngstown St. on Sunday marked the 1,500th career win for Longhorn
Head Coach Augie Garrido. He is the winningest NCAA Division I baseball coach in
the history of the sport.
Texas has thrown four shutouts this season and
sport a glistening 2.47 team ERA. The staff has a nearly 3:1 strikeout to walk
ratio (114 strikeouts and 42 walks). On offense, the Longhorns are averaging 8.2
runs per game as All-American OF Drew Stubbs has a 15-game hitting streak. Texas
also has stolen 26 bases in 15 games while holding opponents to only four. On
defense, the Longhorns have a .983 fielding percentage with only 10 errors in 15
games. Texas also has turned 23 double plays while only hitting into five
because of their team speed.
Poll Notes:
Outside of Texas, a number of teams are playing
extremely well. North Carolina (8-0), South Carolina (9-0), Wichita St. (11-0),
Nebraska (7-0) and Louisiana-Lafayette (10-0) are all unbeaten. Teams with only
one loss include Florida St. (15-1), Tulane (9-1), Louisiana St. (9-1), Georgia
(5-1), Arkansas (9-1), Coastal Carolina (7-1), Texas Tech. (11-1), Oregon St.
(9-1) and College of Charleston (7-1). College of Charleston's pitching staff
has not allowed a run in 21 2/3 innings as the team has won seven straight
games.
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE
SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 |
RHP Nick Allen, Villanova:
Allen threw a seven inning no-hitter
in Villanova's 2-0 win at Norfolk State. It was Allen's first career no-hitter
and just the seventh in school history. He came close to a perfect game as the
only blemish was a hit batsman leading off the third inning. Allen struck out
six without walking a batter. It marked Villanova's first no-hitter since the
1962 baseball season. |
 |
RHP Joba Chamberlain,
Nebraska: Chamberlain struck out 15 batters over seven scoreless innings
in a shutout of New Mexico. He did not walk a batter in the 96-pitch effort as
Chamberlain was two strikeouts shy of the Nebraska single-game record. He
allowed just two infield singles, and only two balls left the infield en route
to his first win with the Cornhuskers. At one point, Chamberlain retired 17
batters in a row. |
 |
3B Steve Pearce, South
Carolina: In his first three games played this season, Pearce hit three
homers, including grand slams on back-to-back days as South Carolina swept a
three game series against Niagara. In the middle game of the series, he went
5-for-5 at the plate as he hit .615 during the weekend (8-for-13). Over the
three games, Pearce knocked in 10 runs for the Gamecocks. |
