College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 21, 2005)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Longhorns (11-0) swept a 3-game series at home against Stanford over the past weekend and are off to their best start since the 1995 team began the year with a 15-0 record. On offense, Texas is averaging 8 runs per game while limiting its opposition to 2.82. Through 11 games, the team has stolen 20 of 25 bases while limiting
opponents to only four in six tries.

The pitching staff is averaging eight strikeouts per game with 88 in 11 games and nearly a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio (88 strikeouts and 33 walks). On defense, Texas is fielding at a .978 clip with 13 double plays. Because of the speed Texas has, opponents have only been able to turn two double plays against the Longhorns.

Poll Notes: Several other teams have been outstanding lately. Tulane (7-0), Louisiana St. (7-0), North Carolina (4-0), South Carolina (6-0) and Georgia (3-0) are all unbeaten and ranked in the top 10. Through four games, North Carolina has yet to allow an earned run and began the season with three straight shutouts. It was the first time in 83 years the Tar Heel pitching staff had thrown back-to-back-to-back goose eggs against opponents. One team that has surprised a lot of people is Southern California (4-0). The Trojans could easily be 5-0 at this juncture since USC was up 7-2 against Cal. St. Fullerton with one out in the top of the eighth inning when rain stopped the contest on Sunday. The game was suspended and will be finished at a later date. Another key series last weekend saw Florida take two of three from highly regarded Miami, Fla. in Gainesville, Fla.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Zach Ward, Gardner-Webb: Ward tossed a 9-inning, complete game no-hitter against Akron in a 2-0 victory. It marked the first no-hitter since Tim Huff accomplished the feat in 1974 — a span of 31 years. Ward struck out 11 batters in the game, walked five and only faced 32 batters.

LHP Taylor Fowler, Arkansas St.: Fowler became the sixth Indian pitcher ever to hurl a no-hitter as he blanked Northwestern, 4-0. Facing 31 batters in the 9-inning contest, he struck out nine and walked four as he threw 124 pitches. It marked the first no-hitter at Arkansas State by one pitcher since 1991.

OF Drew Stubbs, Texas: Stubbs had a monster week for the Longhorns over four games as he cracked four home runs with 11 RBI and went 10-for-18 at the plate. He also scored six runs and compiled 24 total bases with a slugging percentage of 1.333. With his inside-the-park home run against Stanford in game two of the series, Stubbs became the first Longhorn player to hit a home run of this type since the 2003 season. The next day, he connected on his second inside-the-park home run in as many days to win the series finale in the bottom of the ninth as Texas swept the 3-game series against the Cardinal. He became the first player in Longhorn history to hit two inside-the-park home runs in two games.
