College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 14, 2005)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll of 2005.

The Longhorns (7-0) swept a 3-game series against Nevada-Las Vegas over the past weekend. Over seven games, Texas pitching has been superb with a 2.43 ERA. The staff has a better than 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio (66 strikeouts and 20 walks). On offense, the Longhorns have scored 59 runs (8.4 per game) and stolen 13 bases in 17 attempts while holding opponents to only three over seven games.

Poll Notes: The only change in the top 10 this week was in the 10th position as Arizona moved into that spot with a 6-0 record. Every other team in the top 10 went unbeaten during the past week. Besides Texas starting the season with a perfect 7-0 mark, Miami (Fla.) has been equally impressive with a 7-0 record. Three teams made their debut in the top 30 this week in U.C. Irvine (3-game sweep over previously ranked Washington), Southern California (two straight wins over Long Beach St.) and Arkansas (4-0). Two other teams that have been impressive in the early going include Baylor (3-0) and Rice (3-1). Baylor beat Houston, Tennessee and Rice to begin the season. Rice in the last week knocked off top 30 powers Texas A&M and Oklahoma St.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
