College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 31, 2004)

MIAMI NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami (Fla.) is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Hurricanes (44-11) swept a 3-game series at home against Long Beach St. over the past weekend and have now won seven straight. Miami has stolen 125 bases in 168 attempts but has limited its opposition to only 28 in 41 attempts. On offense, the Hurricanes are averaging 8.4 runs per game while the pitching staff has a 3.53 ERA.

Texas, last week's No. 1 team in the nation, slipped to third after going 2-2 in the Big 12 Conference tournament. The Longhorns lost to Nebraska, beat Texas A&M, beat Nebraska and then were eliminated by Oklahoma St. — a team which eventually won the Big 12 tournament.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been on a roll lately. South Carolina tied for fifth during the Southeastern Conference regular season race. But during the SEC tournament last week, the Gamecocks won the championship with a title game victory over Vanderbilt. South Carolina has now won five straight games entering NCAA regional action. Florida St. is another red-hot team with five wins in its last six games. The Seminoles won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament last week. Prior to the tournament, FSU finished third in the ACC regular season race. Two other teams with four consecutive wins include Notre Dame and Oral Roberts.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
