College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 3, 2004)

STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — With wins in 11 of its last 12 games, Stanford University is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Cardinal (35-6) is off to its second-best record in school history after 41 games, ranking only behind the 35-5-1 mark posted by the 1967 club.

In the process of sweeping three straight games at home against Washington St. over the past weekend, Stanford extended its home winning streak to 13 and won its 20th game in a row versus Washington St. dating back to the last Cougar win during the 1978 season.

Texas, ranked No. 1 the previous three weeks, lost two of three at Missouri during the past weekend and fell to second in this week's poll.

Poll Notes: Several other teams are red-hot. East Carolina has won 19 consecutive games, a school record. Georgia is now on a roll with nine straight wins. Georgia Tech., Florida and Texas Tech. have each won six straight. Two new teams to the poll this week are Arizona St. and Cal. St. Fullerton. The Sun Devils knocked off Wichita St. twice last week in Wichita and have won seven of their last nine contests. The Titans are playing superb baseball lately with wins in 13 of their last 15 games as they lead the Big West Conference with an 11-1 record. Two teams fell out of the poll this week in U.C. Irvine (2-2) and Auburn (1-3). Irvine lost two of three against Cal. St. Northridge, a team that is only 15-30 on the season. The wins by Northridge were its first two in Big West Conference action as the Matadors ran their conference mark to 2-10. Auburn lost three straight at Florida and now sits in ninth place in the Southeastern Conference with a 9-12 league record.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

P Ryan Ekberg, Long Island: Ekberg combined with John Dooley to throw the first no-hitter for the Blackbirds since the 1992 season in a 4-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. Dooley started the contest but only lasted one batter into the third inning before leaving with a sore right arm. Ekberg stepped in and struck out nine without a walk over seven innings and retired the last 17 hitters to face him.

INF/OF Brian Hall, Stanford: Hall was 10-for-11 in a 3-game series against Washington St. as he belted two homers, one double and knocked in eight runs. He also was errorless in 23 chances on defense.

C Kurt Suzuki, Cal. St. Fullerton: Suzuki reached base in his final 11 appearances of the week and had nine consecutive hits at one stage — one shy of the Fullerton record — to help the Titans to a 3-game sweep of Cal Poly SLO. He was 11-for-13 in three games and reached base in 13 of 15 appearances as he collected eight singles, one double, one triple and a homer.

RHP Jon Wilson, Winthrop: Wilson picked up one win and three saves last week. In nine total innings over four appearances, he allowed no runs, struck out 13 and walked none.
