College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 24, 2004)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Longhorns (48-11) claimed their second Big 12 Conference regular-season title in three years after beating Texas A&M two of three games. It also was their 72nd conference championship overall.

Texas pitching has been superb all season long with a 2.51 team ERA. The pitching staff has thrown 10 shutouts, struck out 492 batters and walked 177. The Longhorns have tremendous team speed with 102 stolen bases in 140 attempts. On defense, Texas catchers and pitchers have only allowed 40 stolen bases in 61 attempts.

Stanford, ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to second after losing twice to Arizona and Southern California while also winning three times (once against San Francisco and twice against USC).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been on a roll lately. Georgia Tech. has the longest winning streak in the nation at 17 games. The Yellow Jackets clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship with a three-game sweep of Maryland over the past weekend. After starting the year with just two wins in its first seven conference games, Georgia Tech finished the regular season with a school-record 16 straight ACC wins and won its first regular-season championship since 2000. Two other red-hot teams are Wichita St. (9 wins in a row) and Cal. St. Fullerton which swept a 3-game series against Long Beach St. The Titans have now won 21 of their last 25 games after struggling for the first half of the season. Cal. St. Fullerton won the Big West Conference championship by five full games with a glistening 19-2 conference record.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
