College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (May 10, 2004)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — With five straight wins, the University of Texas is No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Longhorns (46-8) have posted victories in 28 of their 31 home games this season. With 101 steals in 54 games, Texas only needs 21 more to have the most stolen bases at the school since the 1990 season when the Longhorns swiped 166.

Stanford, ranked No. 1 last week, lost two of three at Washington during the past weekend and fell to second in this week's poll.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been on a roll lately. Georgia jumped from 19 to 12 in this week's poll after winning 12 straight games. The Bulldogs swept Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. for the first time ever last weekend. It was only the fifth time ever in MSU history that they had been swept at home. Georgia is currently riding a 10-game Southeastern Conference winning streak and are currently third in the SEC with a 15-9 conference mark.

Georgia Tech. has won nine in a row. Miami (Fla.) has also played well with a 6-game winning streak. Two teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Tennessee and Texas Tech. The Volunteers were 1-2 last weekend as Tennessee dropped its fourth straight SEC series. Texas Tech. lost two of three at home against Missouri. One notable big move in the poll saw Wichita St. fall from 12 to 24 this week after losing three of four at Creighton over the past weekend. Central Florida beat Clemson two of three in another key series. It marked the first Clemson home series non-conference loss since Liberty won two of three during the 1999 season.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
