College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 19, 2004)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas is No. 1 for the second straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll of NCAA Division I baseball.

The Longhorns (38-5) have won 11 of their last 12 games and sit at 11-3 in the Big 12 Conference. Pitching has been superb all season long for Texas with a team ERA of 2.32 and nine shutouts in 43 games. The pitching staff has struck out 375 batters and walked 141. On offense, the Longhorns have stolen 91 bases in 122 attempts, walked 190 times and hit 119 extra base hits.

Poll Notes: A major shakeup in the poll this week took place as 15 teams from last week lost two or more games. Teams making major jumps in the poll this week include Oral Roberts, Virginia, East Carolina and Clemson. Oral Roberts finished a stretch of five straight road games against top 25 teams with a 4-1 record. In addition, ORU has now won 24 consecutive Mid-Continent Conference games. Virginia has won 12 straight games with a glistening 32-7 overall record and 14-4 Atlantic Coast Conference mark. East Carolina has won 12 in a row and hit 15 homers in a 3-game series against Cincinnati. The Pirates are now tied for first place in Conference USA with a 12-3 record. East Carolina (31-6) would probably be ranked even higher, but the Pirates only have a 3-5 record against top 25 teams this season. Clemson beat South Carolina and knocked off North Carolina two of three games last week. Other red-hot teams include Rutgers (13 wins in a row) and Cal. St. Fullerton (8 straight wins).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
