College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 29, 2004)

STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Stanford (20-3) is No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Cardinal, off to their best start since 1998, has won 11 of their last 12 games and five in a row. Stanford swept a 3-game series at home against Cal Poly SLO over the past weekend and has now swept its fourth series in six efforts this season.The Cardinal has now won 20 of their last 21 home games.

Louisiana St. (21-4), ranked No. 1 for the past five weeks, slipped to second after winning two of three at home against Mississippi State.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. The College of Charleston has now won a school record 11 straight games as the team sits at 20-5 overall and 9-0 in the Southern Conference. Three teams posted 4-0 records last week in Rice, Florida and Tulane. Long Beach St. swept a 2-game series at home against Wichita St. Then U.C. Irvine beat the 49ers two straight. Two teams fell out of the poll this week in Mississippi St. (1-4 last week) and Georgia (0-4). It is interesting to note that 25 of 30 teams in the poll last week suffered at least one loss.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Jered Weaver, Long Beach St.: For a record fifth straight time this season, Weaver has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of The Week. He tied the school record by striking out 16 of a possible 18 outs in six innings of work against Wichita St. He recorded 14 of the first 15 outs by strikeout. Weaver now has strung together 21 consecutive scoreless innings and is 8-0 with a 0.64 ERA.

OF Michael Campbell, South Carolina: Campbell hit five home runs over four games last week and knocked in 10 runs. He tied a school record by hitting three home runs in a 12-1 win against Wofford. Campbell was 8-for-16 at the plate and scored six runs

LHP Justin Ruhlman, C.C. of Baltimore County-Dundalk: Ruhlman fired a no-hitter against The Naval Academy Preparatory School in a seven inning contest. He struck out six and walked none.
