College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 22, 2004)

LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana State University is ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight week in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Tigers (18-3) have won 16 of their last 18 games. During the past week, LSU beat fourth ranked South Carolina two of three games in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks went into the series with an 18-0 record. LSU out-hit the Gamecocks in the series, 40-28 as LSU belted 7 home runs and nine doubles. On the season, LSU is hitting .345 as a team with 53 doubles, 8 triples and 26 homers in 21 games. The Tigers have reached double figures in hits in 12 consecutive games.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Mississippi is off to the best start in school history at 18-1. The Rebels are currently on a 7-game winning streak. Tennessee has won 15 of its last 16. Oral Roberts has won 13 of 14. Central Florida is off to the best start in school history after 24 games with a 20-4 record and 10 consecutive wins. Georgia is off to its best start since 1992 as the Bulldogs stand at 20-4. Birmingham Southern (15-5) lost its first five games of the season on the road against quality opponents (three losses to Mississippi, one to Alabama-Birmingham and one to Georgia) but has since rebounded with 15 straight wins.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Jarame Beaupre, Delaware: Beaupre pitched the sixth no-hitter in the 117-year history of Delaware baseball in a 9-inning, 13-0 win over Hartford. He struck out seven batters and allowed only two Hartford batters to reach base (walk and hit batter). It was the first no-hitter since 1997. Beaupre faced just 28 batters on the day and retired the first 11 batters of the game.

RHP Philip Humber, Rice: Humber struck out a school record 17 batters in a 4-hit, 3-0 win over Hawaii. He allowed only two walks and also hit one batter.

1B Phillip Hawke, Louisiana-Lafayette: The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Hawke belted 4 home runs and knocked in 15 runs over three games last weekend. He hit two homers against Michigan in the first game which was followed by a grand slam against Harvard. Then he belted a 3-run homer in the third game against the Crimson. He finished the trio of games with 15 total bases and a 1.727 slugging percentage.
