TEXAS NO. 1 IN
COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
(www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas is
ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll of NCAA
Division I baseball. The Longhorns, 9-0 to kick off the 2004 season, knocked off
defending national champion Rice 6-3 over the past weekend. Texas, which has
outscored opponents 67-30 in nine games, has stolen 27 bases while limiting its
opposition to only seven.
Pitching has been superb with a 2.46 team ERA
as the staff has struck out 77 batters in nine games — an average of 8.5
strikeouts per game. The Longhorns are off to their best start since 1995 when
Texas began the year with 15 consecutive victories. Rice and Miami, Fla., both
tied at No. 1 last week, slipped to second and third this week as they began
their seasons with 2-1 records. Rice beat Texas Tech and Kansas St. but lost to
Texas. Miami won two of three against Florida at home.
Poll Notes:
Several teams have been red-hot. Florida Atlantic
has won seven straight to open the season. Stanford has posted a superb 8-1
record. Both Arizona and Arizona St. continue to play well with identical 5-1
records. Arizona knocked off Cal. St. Fullerton two of three games at home over
the past weekend. Only one team fell out of the top 30 this week in Ohio St. The
Buckeyes slipped to 0-3 on the season. Texas A&M entered the poll for the first
time this season with a 3-0 record at No. 30. Arizona St. saw its NCAA record
consecutive games scoring streak snapped at 506 Sunday with its first loss of
the season, 6-0 to Oklahoma. The Sun Devils had not been blanked since April 7,
1995 against the Southern California Trojans.
The Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth
took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE
SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 |
LHP Zach Jackson, Texas A&M:
Jackson hurled a 7-inning no-hitter
against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 15-0 win. He faced only one batter over
the minmum (walk in fifth inning) and struck out eight. |
 |
P Luke Holscher, Western
Oregon: Holscher pitched a 3-0, 7-inning no-hitter against Mesa State. He
walked three and struck out three as he faced only two batters over the
minimum. |
 |
P Cory VanAllen, Baylor:
VanAllen and Zane Carlson combined
for a 7-inning no-hitter as Baylor blanked Loyola Marymount, 1-0. VanAllen
pitched six perfect innings for the Bears before the first batter in the
seventh reached on a fielding error. Carlson then recorded the final three
outs to finish the no-no. |
 |
RHP Jered Weaver, Long Beach
St.: Weaver struck out 14 batters in
seven innings and walked one in a 3-1 win over Southern California.
Incredibly, he struck out the first 10 Trojan batters he faced in the game as
he gave up only one run on two hits. |
 |
LHP David Purcey, Oklahoma:
Purcey was instrumental in ending
Arizona State's NCAA record 506 consecutive scoring games streak with a 6-0
win. In seven innings, he allowed only a swinging-bunt single by the Sun
Devils. At one point, he retired 16 straight batters as he struck out six and
walked two. Jarod McAuliff of Oklahoma closed out the game in the final two
innings to preserve the shutout against the Sun Devils. The last time ASU was
blanked in a game was April 7, 1995 against Southern California. |
