FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Florida St. (40-8-1) has been
ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll after
Cal. St. Fullerton was upset three straight times by U.C. Riverside over the past weekend.
Entering the series against U.C. Riverside, the Titans
had won 10 in a row and 14 of their last 15 games. But the Highlanders beat the Titans,
13-3, 4-3 and 5-1 to throw the Big West Conference into turmoil. Long Beach St. now leads
the Big West with a 12-3 league mark followed by Fullerton and U.C. Riverside at 11-4.
Florida St. beat highly regarded Georgia Tech. two of
three in Atlanta. The Seminoles are first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 13-5
record and lead the league with a staff ERA of 2.55. Opponents are just 31-for-59 in
stolen base attempts this season while FSU has picked off 16 runners.
Poll Notes: Four teams fell out of
the top 30 this week, including Alabama (1-3 last week), Missouri (3-2), Oklahoma St.
(2-3) and Texas Christian (2-2). New teams in the poll this week are U.C. Riverside (36-12
and fresh from a 3-game sweep of previously top-ranked Cal. St. Fullerton), New Mexico St.
(38-11, winners of 9 straight), Western Carolina (34-14, 10 wins in a row), and Rutgers
(26-15, first in the Big East Conference with a league mark of 15-4 and wins in 14 of its
last 15 games).

Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP Dennis Bigley, Oral Roberts: In
two outings last week, Bigley struck out 19 batters over 12 innings and walked only one.
He struck out five in five innings against S.W. Missouri St. and then tossed the first
shutout of his career against Southern Utah, striking out a career-high 14 in seven
innings. Bigley struck out 10 of the first 13 hitters he faced and struck out the side
three times.

 | LF Brian Hopkins, S.E. Missouri
St.: Hopkins was 13-for-19 on the week with five homers, three doubles and 13 RBI. He
had 31 total bases enroute to a 1.632 slugging percentage. In one game, he hit three home
runs as he set a school record for hits in a game with six.

 | LHP J.A. Happ, Northwestern: Happ tossed his fifth
complete game of the season, striking out a career-high 16 Iowa batters with only one walk
in seven innings to earn Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolades. |
