College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 26, 2003) RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University (48-10) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Owls replace Florida St. which posted a 3-2 record last week and finished third at the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament behind Georgia Tech. and North Carolina St. The 48 wins by Rice are the second most ever at the school, surpassed only by 52 wins in 1999. With a series win against Fresno St. over the past weekend, the Owls won all 10 Western Athletic Conference series this season, duplicating their 2002 feat. Rice enters the post-season with a .322 batting average, 2.82 staff ERA and a .979 team fielding percentage. Rice was 30-3 at home this season, the most regular-season wins at home in school history. Poll Notes: Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Rutgers (3-2 last week), Minnesota (2-2) and Texas Christian (0-2). Two new teams in the poll are Tulane (43-17, second place in Conference USA tournament over the past weekend) and Washington (40-16, 3-game sweep of Southern California last weekend, finished third in the Pac-10). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
