College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (April 7, 2003) RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University (32-1) has been ranked No. 1 for the third straight time in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Owls, winners of 29 consecutive games, are hitting .336 as a team. Pitching and defense have also been superb. The staff ERA is 2.22 with 337 strikeouts and only 87 walks. On defense, the Owls have committed 17 errors in 33 games for a fielding percentage of .987. Over the past week, Rice beat Houston, 11-0 and swept a 3-game series from Hawaii (12-4, 2-0 and 8-1). Poll Notes: Outside of Rice, Missouri is the hottest team in the nation with 11 straight wins. The Tigers, 23-8 overall and 8-3 in the Big 12 Conference, are on its best run since 15 years ago when the 1988 Tigers won 13 straight games. Missouri is off to its best Big 12 start in history. Another red-hot team is North Carolina St. which is ranked ninth this week after winning 22 of its last 25 games. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Alabama (1-3), South Carolina (1-3), North Carolina (3-2) and Texas Tech. (0-2). New teams in the poll include Missouri, Nevada-Las Vegas (26-9), Western Carolina (23-10) and South Alabama (21-9). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
