CAL. ST. FULLERTON NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Cal. St. Fullerton (34-8) was named
the top team in the nation in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I
baseball poll.
The Titans, which have won six in a row and 10 of their
last 11 games, unseated Rice which had been ranked No. 1 the prior four polls. The Owls
had won 30 straight games only two weeks ago and were sitting at 33-1 on the season. But
since that time, Rice has only posted a 4-5 record. Last week Rice was 2-3 and slipped
from No. 1 to fifth with a 37-6 overall record.
Poll Notes: Four teams fell out of
the poll this week in Wake Forest (2-3), South Alabama (2-2), Lamar (2-2) and Wichita St.
(2-3). New teams in the poll include North Carolina (31-11) which is currently on a 9-game
winning streak, Pepperdine (26-15, 7-game winning streak), Texas Christian (26-15, 6-game
winning streak) and Nevada-Las Vegas (32-11).
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

increased his hitting streak to 23 games after going 12-for-18 last week with 5 home runs,
10 runs scored and 8 RBI.

 | 2B Taylor Eckel, Toledo: Eckel
cracked 5 home runs as he went 19-for-26 over six games last week with 12 runs scored and
14 RBIs. He also added two stolen bases and had a 1.423 slugging percentage.

 | RHP Brad Sullivan, Houston: Sullivan
tied a school single-game record with 16 strikeouts to lead the Cougars to an 8-2 win over
St. Louis. He struck out the side four times. It marked the 10th double-digit strikeout
performance of his career, another UH record.

 | LHP Scott Lewis, Ohio St.: Lewis struck out 16
batters against Indiana in a 9-3 win over the Hoosiers. The talented southpaw one week
earlier fanned 20 batters in a 6-1 complete game victory over Iowa. So in his last two
starts which span over 17 innings, Lewis has struck out 36 batters. |
