College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (March 31, 2003) RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University (28-1) has been ranked No. 1 for the second straight time in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Owls, winners of 25 consecutive games, owns wins over eight ranked opponents this season. Rice is hitting .333 as a team and has a staff ERA of 2.39 through 29 games. It is interesting to note that the Owls have scored more runs (224) than opposing teams have hits (208). In addition, the team has a glistening fielding percentage of .988 with only 13 errors. Georgia Tech., ranked second in last week's poll, slipped to eighth after losing three straight at Miami, Fla. over the past weekend. The Hurricanes (23-4) have won nine straight games and moved from 13th last week to 7th in the current poll. Another red-hot team is Mississippi St. (22-3-1). The Bulldogs have won eight straight and are off to their best start since the 1979 season. Mississippi St. moved from ninth last week to sixth in the latest poll. Poll Notes: Five teams fell out of the poll this week, including: South Alabama (1-2), Tennessee (1-3), Kansas (1-2), Mississippi (2-3) and Washington (3-2). New teams in the poll this week include Oklahoma St., Notre Dame, Florida Atlantic, Texas A&M and Arkansas. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
